DART Network

The Direct Action & Research Training (DART) Network is a national network of grassroots, metropolitan, congregation-based, community organizations spread throughout the United States. A DART organization is where people can achieve their dreams for social, racial, and economic justice. Each local organization in the DART Network has its own leaders, staff, funding base, and accomplishments toward justice at the local level. Unpaid leaders from the local community make the decisions and ultimately run these organizations. Organizing staff provides the facilitation, training, and leadership development needed to make it happen. Recent victories include education reform, affordable housing investments, fair immigration policies, job training programs, and dozens of others. Local DART organizations are supported by the DART Center, Inc. based in Miami.

The Federation of DART Organizations in Florida (FDOF) is a coalition of ten grassroots community organizations representing more than 200,000 people in 200 churches, synagogues, and mosques throughout Florida. Being a member of the FDOF enables PACT to push for change at the state level in addition to its local community organizing in Miami-Dade County.

In February 2000, the organizations of FDOF joined to bring over 1000 people to Tampa for a meeting with State Education Commissioner Tom Gallagher. The results were impressive: Mr. Gallagher and supportive state legislators delivered $7.25 million in state funds to expand the implementation of Direct Instruction, a phonics-based reading curriculum. The statewide success not only delivered real dollars for education reform locally, it also helped the local organizations gain a new level of respect from local decision-makers. Currently the FDOF is working to address education and health care issues state wide. The organizations that make up the FDOF are:

  • FAITH – Fighting Against Injustice Towards Harmony – Daytona Beach, FL
  • FAST – Faith and Action for Strength Together – St. Petersburg, FL
  • HOPE – Hillsborough Organization for Progress and Equality – Tampa, FL
  • ICARE – Interchurch Coalition for Action, Reconciliation, and Empowerment – Jacksonville, FL
  • PACT – People Acting for Community Together – Miami, FL
  • PEACE – People Engaged in Active Community Efforts – Riviera Beach, FL
  • PEACE – Polk Ecumenical Action Council for Empowerment – Lakeland, FL
  • SURE – Sarasota United for Responsibility and Equity – Sarasota, FL
  • TEAM – Tallahassee Equality Action Ministry – Tallahassee, FL
